Two hundred thirty-three years have passed since that historic July 4, 1776, when our nation was born. There are many references to God that our founding fathers made, acknowledging our trust and dependence as a nation. In praying for our nation, reflect with us on some of the lyrics of our National Anthem, and other American patriotic songs that refer to a nation under God:
Star Spangled Banner (Fourth Stanza):
O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
My Country, Tis of Thee (Fourth Stanza):
Our father’s God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom’s holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.
America the Beautiful (First Stanza and Chorus):
O beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.
